Charity Christmas Post

Christmas is coming and along with it our Charity Christmas Post scheme. We will be contacting all our usual helpers but do need additional help delivering and sorting the mail.

The scheme first operated in 1988 when, for only 10p, we delivered 891 items around the borough of Epsom & Ewell during the two weeks leading up to Christmas. We used cardboard boxes as collection boxes and set up a makeshift sorting office at the scout HQ.

Flush with success we repeated the exercise in 1989 delivering 1,281 items, a 25% increase! 1990 saw Ashtead added as both a pick up and delivery area. This increased the volume nearly 3 fold with 3,348 items delivered. 1991 we added Tadworth and the scheme doubled to 7,308 items.

The next big change came in 2002 when the Ashley Centre, now The Mall, sponsored the scheme and has done so every year since.

This year we are charging only 15p and covering Epsom, Ewell, Ashtead and Tadworth (KT17 – KT21 inclusive) and once again expect to deliver over 10,000 items.

We now have our own distinctive letter boxes positioned in over 20 locations including The Mall, Sainsbury’s in Kiln Lane and ASDA at Burgh Heath.

In addition to providing a community service, we raise much needed funds towards equipment and support of over 300 local youngsters in the largest Scout Group in the UK.
