After our trip to Uganda in 2003, we decided that we would go back to Uganda in 2006, since we all had such a good time. We opened up the expedition to anyone interested in our area, and managed to pick up quite a few new members. Unfortunately, we also had to lose a couple of the team due to other commitments. At the moment we have about 30 people going to Uganda in 2006! We hope to have as good a time in 2006 as we did last time, and so have already started planning several projects, as well as maintaining our connections with our previous projects. The nature of our proposed projects are described below. Bogotoa When out in Uganda in 2003, we visited a village on the shores of Lake Victoria. The village was over an hour's drive along a very bumpy track from the nearest town, and by the time we arrived everyone was feeling slightly relieved that we got there in one piece! Whilst there, we spoke to the school's headteacher, and found out that 6 out of every 7 children living there do not reach adulthood because they drink water from the lake, which contains waterborne diseases such as bilharzia. The nearest safe water was over an hours walk away from the village, and so it took over 2 hours for the villagers to fetch and bring back safe drinking water; hence the reason they were drinking lake water. We were all appalled at the conditions in this town, and decided that we would make 'Lake Town', as we called it, a project for 2006. We are now looking into providing a safe water point nearer the village, and have spoken to the national waterboards concerning this. There are a few problems with the area, since it is so close to the lake, for example the water under the ground near the lake is contaminated by the lake water and so it too is unfit for drinking. We are still trying to find solutions to these problems and will keep you updated concerning the progress of this project, both on this page and on the news page. Mayuge We are continuing with our current project out in Mayuge in 2006. This involves acquiring land for a scout hut with adjacent land for camping. In 2003 we had acquired the land but did not have the funds to start building the scout hut. The land was previously used for farming, and we suggeated that the scouts kept it for this until the plans for the scout hut could be finalised, in order to provide some revenue. We are now sending money out to our contact in Mayuge, so that work can begin on the scout hut. We will keep you updated on this project. Tororo There were two main projects in Tororo in 2003, a playground and a scout hut. The playground was completed in 2003, and so only a small amount of money is needed to pay for maintenance from our current funds. The foundations for the scout hut were being laid in 2003, and the building work is progressing at a steady rate. We are currently sending out small installments of money to keep the project running. Again, we will inform you of any developments. |
